GIRI WANA RALLY

Wana Giri Rally is a cross country, Wana meaning forest, while Giri means mountain. The competition was followed by 30 schools, each team consists of 6 students. Race route through the forest and mountains, with the distance 20 km.This event was organized by YPMMD West Celebes, Greenvision Indonesia, and Majene's Youth Environmental Club.Supported by the Central Management of River Basin - Lariang Mamasa, Majene Government of Majene Regency, and UNEP

Majene Regency is one of 5 Regency/Municipality in West Sulawesi Province with long beach 125 km which located at Western Coast West Sulawesi tong from South to North with wide 947,84 km.
Majene Regency consist of 8 District namely Banggae, Banggae Timur, Pamboang, Sendana, Sendana Tammerodo, Sendana Tubo, Malunda and Ulumanda, include 35 village/Sub district.
The capital of Majene Regency located at Banggae District with width urban area 5,519 km, in position Southern Majene Regency, with hours achieve about 3 to 4 hours from Mamuju, the capital of West Sulawesi, It is about 120 km. From Makassar ( the capital of South Sulawesi) its about 8-10 hours.

Majene Regency population is 137.474 peoples consist of male are 66.494 and female 70.980 with 1,060 peoples per km2.

Our Mangrove Project in few figures:

• Started in 1990

• Reforestation target in 2015: 2 millions trees

• Planted trees until June 1st 2011: 600.500

• Reforested area: 250 ha

• Funding: Self-supporting

• 3 plantation sites in Majene, West Sulawesi: Baluno Sendana, Malunda and Banggae

• Species used: Rhyzophora apiculata and Rhyzophora mucronata, Bruguiera spp

• Survival rate in June 1st 2011: 70% (before replacement of dead trees)

• Number of families involved in the project: 108, which means around 1450 direct beneficiaries

Environmental goods:

• Wood for construction and energy, mainly used by local populations

• Products from fisheries: oyster, fishes, crabs and shrimps

• Food products coming from mangroves flora

• Feed for livestock (goat)

These environmental goods and services are vital for local populations, usually among the poorest and the most dependent on the natural ecosystems.
